OrCam MyEye 3 Pro - when technology gives independence back to people with low vision
Halkidiki - this ring with three "sleeves" has always been a magnet for family vacations, and this year we couldn't resist the temptation. With a kid (and a dog!) we loaded up the car and headed for the blue waters, soft sands and that feeling of escape from everyday life that only the sea can give.
🚗 How to get to Halkidiki
The drive from Bulgaria is perfectly bearable - especially if you leave in the morning. From Sofia to Sithonia (the second "arm" of Halkidiki) is about 5-6 hours by car, including breaks. We went through Kulata-Promahon and then on the highway to Thessaloniki. The road to Neos Marmaras is nice but with lots of curves, so be prepared.
🌅 Neos Marmaras - lively but charming
Our first stop - Neos Marmaras. If you like a place with a little bit of everything - beaches, restaurants, evening walks and the noise of happy tourists - this is the town for you. Set on a hill overlooking the bay, Neos Marmaras is a great base for families.
On the beach, kids were digging endlessly, the water was shallow and warm, and there was ice cream at every turn. For dinner - typical Greek tavernas with gyros, octopus and salads. The place is teeming with life, but not overly so. And if you like souvenirs, you'll get lost among the colourful shops.
🌿 Vourvourou - entrance to the island world
The real magic started when we decided to go to Vourvourou - A green, quiet, tidy village where life flows in slow motion. There we didn't just sunbathe - we rented a boatto sail around о. Diaporos.
It was an amazing experience - turquoise lagoons, hidden beaches, not a soul alive on some of them. We stopped where we liked, jumped in the water, collected shells, had lunch on board and laughed our hearts out. The boat had an awning, comfortable steering and life jackets. The water around the island was calm and perfect even for beginners.
🏝️ Further south - to the third sleeve
And just when we thought we had seen the most beautiful thing, we decided to spontaneously walk to the third sleeve - Athos. Although less popular for family holidays, it hides real treasures - bays accessible only by boat, and wild islets.
We rented a boat here too - this time from a smaller harbour, but with an even more relaxed atmosphere. We sailed around the small islands off Amolofi (if you want contact details - email us!). And the funniest thing was that we got to island with goatswho stood quite undisturbed among the rocks, as if waiting just for our boat. One even looked at us rather suspiciously, but remained meek while we took pictures.
👧🐶 Travelling with a child and a dog
Izzy (the dog) did great - she had a life jacket and her own place in the boat. And Zara was in seventh heaven - jumping, swimming and making up names for every cove we stopped in. If you're wondering if a boat and a kid are a good combination - it's a big YES from us as long as you have an awning, water, hats and a cooler bag.
